INFERTILITY

Infertility is the problem that refers to the biological inability of a man or a woman to conceive or reproduce. This also includes the inability of the couple to reproduce even after having regular unprotected sex.

In females the infertility is seen due to failure in obstruction of fallopian tube, ovulation, infection, and inflammation in uterus or due to some other disease. In males the infertility is due to complete absence of sperm, less sperm count or poor quality of sperm. And thus infertility treatment in males and females is done separately.

Ayurvedic View:

Ayurveda explains infertility as a result of various doshas like vatta, kapha, and pitta. It can be because of vitiation in any one of them or all three of them leading to infertility or sterility.

Infertility is grouped into two types

  • Primary infertility – here the couple is not able to reproduce even after one year of unprotected intercourse.
  • Secondary infertility – this is when the woman is not able to conceive after one or more pregnancy.

Causes:

A wide range of physical and emotional factors can contribute to infertility and there can be a problem in male or female or both.

Infertility may occur in female when:

  • The fertilized egg is not able to get attached to the lining of the uterus
  • The egg does not get transported from ovaries to the womb
  • The ovaries have problem with producing eggs
  • Malnutrition or unhealthy eating habits
  • Heavy medicines and treatments including chemotherapy and other drugs
  • Alcoholism and smoking
  • Obesity
  • Older age
  • Diseases – cancer, tumor, diabetes, clotting disorder, PCOS, STD, cyst, fibroid, thyroid
  • Birth defects
  • Excessive exercise
  • Too much or too less hormones

Male infertility may be due to:
